Money Saving Mondays: Celebrating the 4th of July on the Cheap!

Continuing series of Money Saving Mondays! I love to save money, post deals, and just in general make my dollar stretch a little further so keep up with me on Mondays for some easy ways to save money!

Today let’s discuss how to celebrate the 4th of July on the cheap while still having fun and making memories!

Don’t go overboard when it comes to serving your family and friends! The 4th is all about hot dogs, brats, or burgers, so there is no need to spend lots of money on fancy food! Fire up the BBQ and grill outside. You can always serve simple sides like chips and potato salad (both of which are normally on sale the week before the 4th).

Decorate with dollar bin finds! You don’t need to spend a lot to have a patriotic party! The dollar bins at Target are filled with decorations from cool flip flops to flag banners. If you don’t have a Target, check the dollar store, and if it comes down to only having a Wal-mart or grocery store, most Chinet and Solo dispoable wares are in red and blue at all times!

Make an art project out of your decorations! To celebrate the 4th, turn it into a crafty activity for your kids! You can print free coloring sheets online (an example here), or even just take plain paper, cut out stars in red, white and blue construction paper, and get out the glue, glitter, and colors!

Find a free event locally! Most cities and towns throw some type of 4th of July bash or fireworks show. Plan your BBQ for the afternoon, and spend the evening under the stars with your family and friends taking in the fireworks! Don’t forget the bug spray! If you live near a Bass Pro Shops, visit the store to make a birdhouse this weekend (go here for more info, and I will have a reminder post later this week)!

If you have additional ideas for saving money this 4th of July, please leave me a comment!

Want to join in on Money Saving Mondays? Copy my button, post it on your blog, and leave me a comment with a link to your post (I will figure out the Mr. Linky thing soon)!

Review: Nature Valley Nut Clusters!

Thanks to My Blog Spark, I recently had the opportunity to review Nature Valley Nut Clusters! New Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters come in four tasty flavors; Nut Lovers, Roasted Almond, Roasted Cashew and Honey Roasted Peanut. These bite size clusters of nuts, granola and a touch of honey are definitely a yummy and healthy treat for any time of the day.

We love the crunchy Nature Valley granola bars, but really liked the added protein of the nuts in these little clusters. Our almost 3-year old loves the cashew nut clusters. He begs for them at snack time! My husband loves the honey roasted peanut and equates it to healthy cracker jacks! It is the perfect combination of sweet & salty flavor and crunchy texture! You can see and taste the nuts and granola in every bite, and these are whole nuts, not nuts that are ground up inside the granola!

We really liked these Granola Nut Clusters! If you haven't tried them, you should check them out next time you see them in your local store! They are coming out soon!

Chex Mix Turtle Bars: Review & Giveaway (3 winners)

Thanks for visiting, this giveaway has ended!

Thanks to My Blog Spark, I was able to review these yummy Chex Mix Turtle bars! We were all delightfully surprised by the flavor. Although they aren't quite as yummy as a true peanut turtle, the bars are definitely a delightful snack. At 130 calories per bar, they are a good hold over between meals or to grab and go for breakfast! Full of whole grains, like all Chex products, these are really yummy! And they even taste great a little warm and melted! (the postman left them in the mailbox on a Saturday when it was 108 degrees, and we got home a few hours later)

This delicious snack combines crunchy Chex pieces, pretzels, and peanuts with caramel and chocolate. And if that's not enough, they have at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving (48 grams recommended daily)! A great combination of the ingredients you love, Chex Mix Bars are a tasty treat that will leave you feeling satisfied and guilt-free!

Okay, want to win two boxes of Chex Mix Turtle bars? They are truly yummy? and there will be three winners (each getting two boxes)!

Money Saving Mondays - Is it really worth clipping coupons?

Continuing series of Money Saving Mondays! I love to save money, post deals, and just in general make my dollar stretch a little further so keep up with me on Mondays for some easy ways to save money!

Today’s question? Is it really worth clipping coupons?

One of the most recommended ways for consumers to save money is to clip coupons – coupons for groceries, restaurants, electronics, craft supplies and almost anything else that comes with a coupon (and if you haven’t noticed there are more and more coupons all the time). Typically, consumers often pose the valid question; is coupon clipping worth my time? After all doesn’t time equal money?

Okay so when is it just not worth the effort you put forward?

Don’t use coupons for stuff you don’t want or need – Coupons are used to market products, don’t forget that when you are deciding if you need something or not! If you buy something your family does not need or regularly use just because you have a coupon – then you're throwing away your money. It is money lost if you aren’t really going to use something anyway! Now granted, if you are getting something for free or nearly free to donate to others that need it more than you, then it is probably worthwhile!

Don’t drive across town just because you have a coupon – If you have to fight traffic and drive 45 minutes to the only store in your town where you can redeem your coupon, than it better be for a really big ticket item and the coupon better save you a significant amount of money. Otherwise the cost of gas and travel time will likely be more than the amount you're saving with your coupon.

What are some tips for getting the high-dollar coupons?

Go digital when it comes to couponing - See my earlier post on e-coupons here Then just file away your sunday paper coupon inserts by date so that you can find something easily if you find a great deal (see my earlier post on paper coupons here)!

Become a loyalty member – If you use one company's services on a regular basis, see if they offer a membership for loyal patrons. Many companies have this type of service, and will continually send you some very nice coupons or give you an annual discount. For example, we have bugs, lots of them, especially ants, that tend to like our house when Spring rolls around every year. We pay a monthly fee to a pest control company that does quarterly treatments and on-call treatments anytime the little things show up. Sure it costs a little more than buying the spray bottle at Lowe’s or Home Depot, but they also stand behind the end result and show up just in time to rid the house of ants that show up the morning of your son's 1st birthday party!

Search manufacturer websites or sign up for their mailing lists – If there is a big ticket item you're in the market for or a brand you buy on a regular basis – take a few minutes to search the company website. Manufacturer coupons offer some of the largest discounts of all coupons. If you have a baby or young children, be sure to check out the diaper and formula manufacturer’s sites and sign up for their mailing lists!
